Commissions of the U.S. and of Massachusetts granted to Ralph Cross of Newburyport, Mass., to his son William, and to his grandsons Ralph and George Cross. Ralph Cross Sr. was commissioned Major in the 2nd Regiment, Essex County Division, Mass. Militia in 1776, and eventually rose to Brigadier General. After retiring from the military he was appointed General Commissioner of Bankruptcy for the Mass. District and Collector of Customs for the Newburyport Division. William Cross served as Justice of the Peace for Essex County, and Inspector of Revenue for the Port of Newburyport. Ralph Cross Jr. and George Cross received officers' commissions in the 2nd Brigade of the 2nd Division, Massachusetts Militia. The collection also contains an historical memorandum on the Cross family by Charles Robert Cross. Also, a U.S. pass for the brigantine Experiment, 1810.
